Tottenham Hotspur's inspirational young centre back Michael Dawson finally made his England international debut this evening, as his country came from behind to record a 2-1 win over Hungary at Wembley.
Dawson, a second-half substitute for scandalous Chelsea skipper John Terry, failed to cut out a through ball from Zoltan Gera, which led to Everton defender Phil Jagielka diverting the ball into his own net after 62 minutes. Replays show, however, that Dawson successfully backtracked to prevent the ball from actually crossing the England goalline.
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, disappointing in South Africa, spared Dawson's blushes however, with a quick-fire double to lead the Three Lions to a victory.
Firstly, Gerrard powered a shot into the top corner of the net. Then, two minutes later, he collected a pass from Ashley Young, eased past three Hungarian defenders, and guided the ball past goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly and into the near corner.
In what was an unconvincing performance from an England 'A' side, the fans booed the side from the field at half-time, despite initially greeting the team with a relatively warm welcome.
Manager Fabio Capello decided to rest Tottenham's other stars, with the opening Premier League fixture against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon in mind.
